With Eid ul Adha being just around the corner, there are a number of things which should not be avoided in order to keep your surroundings clean.

This year, with the intention to make Karachi free from waste dumps, the ‘Clean Karachi’ campaign is initiated to keep the areas and cities clean. With proper waste management and sheer understanding of cleaning the city as a responsible citizen, this campaign would bring long term benefits for the city.

Usually, the first day of Eid ul Adha is a battle with improperly disposed waste spread everywhere around. Since after COVID-19, the health situations have changed and people are practicing to improve their hygienic routine. Under such circumstances, it is extremely important to practice the cleaning protocols as much as possible to keep the surroundings safe from any unpleasant odor and improper waste.

Here are 4 things we can do to keep our vicinity clean this Eid.

1-   Properly sterilize the knife

The knife you use to slaughter the animal must be sterilized in hot water to avoid any bacterial contamination. Always use a sharp and clean knife because an improperly cleaned knife can transfer the bacteria onto the surface of the animal which is later carried to the homes. Boiling the knife and then washing it from chlorine enriched water can kill all the germs and bacteria from its surface.

2-   Disinfect the blood spot properly

We know that there would be a lot of blood in the streets and if the blood remains unattended for several hours, it can produce devastated health issues.

To save yourself and your surroundings, you must have to disinfect the spot soon after you’re done with the qurbani. Lime powder along with the water can be used as a powerful disinfectant to remove all the blood from the ground.

3-   Keep the drains clean

Drains are the primary source behind the spread of odor in the entire vicinity and once the raw flesh or dump gets stuck in the drains, it can be the reason for the bacteria to breed. Through the use of bleach and chemical cleaners, you can clean the drains and easily eliminate the flesh pieces from there. Also make sure to collect the animal skin and waste in large garbage bags to avoid the spread of germs.

4-   Avoid sacrificing your animal in the middle of the street

In Pakistan, it is a very common practice to slaughter the animal in the middle of the street which is illegal and extremely unhealthy for the surroundings.

It accumulates a lot of waste on the streets and roads and makes extremely difficult for the municipal team to clean it out. The debris and accumulated waste not only contaminate the drains but also produce unsettling visuals for everyone. You can look for the empty grounds with proper drainage system to perform qurbani.
